ABOUT NM YHEC

EVENTS

Youth Hunter Education Course is made up of 8 events in which competitors test their skills in different hunting disciplines.

ARCHERY

Participants will walk through a field archery course in a natural setting. The course is designed to simulate shooting situations encountered while bowhunting.

MUZZLELOADING

Participants will be shooting steel knockdown or swingers at three distances from 20 to 75 yards.

ORIENTEERING

The Orienteering course is made up of several different disciplines required to properly navigate during a wilderness adventure.

RIFLE

Participants will move or walk through a rifle field course in a natural setting.  The course is designed to simulate shooting situations encountered while hunting. 

SHOTGUN

Participants will walk through a Hunter's Clays course. This course is not patterned after conventional skeet or trap shooting, but is designed to simulate hunting conditions and situations. 

SAFETY TRAIL

Participants or teams will walk through a predetermined trail designed to simulate actual hunting conditions and situations. 

WILDLIFE ID

Participants or teams will walk through a field and/or woodland course in a natural setting. The course is designed to simulate actual wildlife sign encounters while outdoors.

KNOWLEDGE EXAM


The Hunter Responsibility Exam will include 50 objective questions (written, multiple choice, true or false or fill-in-the-blank).

Schedule

Thursday

2:00pm-5:00pm Registration/Practice

No practice allowed on competition ranges.

All competitors must be registered by 10:00am Friday. 

 

Friday

10:00am Opening Ceremony/Coors Building

All teams will be introduced and team banners are allowed.

Coaches meeting will immediately follow opening ceremonies.

Coaches need to attend with a list of their team members.

1:00pm Competitions Open

All Events (except Test) open for Competition.
Starting positions will be assigned on Friday morning for both Friday and Saturday. Teams can choose any event EXCEPT their Saturday starting event after completion of your first assigned event. 

 

6:00pm All competitors must report to take written test at Coors Building.

Saturday

7:00am Competitions Open

5:00pm Competitions Close

Sunday

8:00am Award Ceremony/Coors Building
